1897 FEUDAL & MODERN JAPAN Arthur M. Knapp ex libris Augustus Higginson 75 bucks. 2 vols, copyright 1896, pub 1897. includes a contemporary bibliograpahy. these 2 vols belonged to artist and architect Augustus Higginson, family papers in the Massachusettes Historical Society. He died around 1921 in Santa Barbara , CA. Very clean copy,minor edge scuffing, book blocks solid and clean. vol 1 has a small offset of a paper bookmark at pg 50 in the margin. shipping weight 1 pound media mail, size 9 x 6 x 1. I was certain his father was with Perry in Japan but I can no longer find the reference which is why I thought Augustus had the 2 vol set.I bought these from a book seller in Santa Barbara. his bio:He was born at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard, he studied architecture with the Boston firm of Andrews & Jacques (1889-91) and then continued his studies at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1892-94). On returning to the States he opened an office in the Monadnock Building in Chicago as Belden & Higginson and received various commissions for residential buildings, notably at Winnetka where his brother, George, had established himself as the region’s largest landowner. His work was very much influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement. After his first wife died in 1905 he moved to Montecito in California and worked in the Santa Barbara area until his death. Among the houses he built there are the Higginson House (1905-10) at 1000 Channel Drive, Montecito, and the Coe House (1909) at Santa Barbara. In 1895, he was married at Lenox to Mary Girvan, of San Francisco. She died in 1905 and in 1907 he married Ednah Girvan at Piedmont in California. He died at Santa Barbara. his father:George Higginson (1833-1921) was born in New York on 6 August 1833, the son of George Higginson (1804-1889) and Mary Cabot Lee (1811-1849). His family moved to Boston in 1838, and he was educated in Boston public schools. He was employed as a merchant in Boston in the East India trade until 1857 when the company failed. In 1860, he moved to Lenox, Mass., purchasing and restoring an 18th-century home and creating a 160 acre “gentleman’s estate” where he lived and worked until his death. George was an active member of the Episcopal Church and Republican Party. On 17 December 1862, George married Elizabeth “Lili” Hazard Barker (1836-1901), and the couple had three children: George Higginson (1864-1936), Augustus Barker Higginson (1866-1915), and Jeanette Barker Higginson (1868-1903). He died in Stockbridge on 19 June 1921.
