It was developed to provide an effective escort for bombers. With the addition of external fuel tanks, it could accompany bombers all the way to Germany and back, making it an ideal choice for escorting bombers to their deepest targets. P-51D “Bubble-Top” Mustang The P-51D included many enhancements and became the most commonly produced variant, with almost 8,000 units built. The most noticeable upgrade was the new “bubble-top” canopy, which significantly improved the pilot’s visibility. The P-51D also received the new K-14 gunsight, an increase from four to six .50-caliber machine guns, and a simplified ammunition feed system that significantly reduced gun jams. The P-51D arrived in large numbers in Europe in the spring of 1944, and became the USAAF’s main long-range escort fighter. The versatile Mustang also functioned as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Only a few Luftwaffe aircraft could match the P-51D. By the end of the war, Mustangs had destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in the air, more than any other USAAF fighter in Europe. The P-51Ds arrived in the Pacific and CBI theaters by the end of 1944. In the spring of 1945, P-51Ds based in Iwo Jima started flying long-range B-29 escort and low-level fighter-bomber missions against ground targets in Japan. The success of the Merlin Mustangs was remarkable. The P-51 became one of the aviation world’s elite aircraft. A total of 14,819 Mustangs of all types were built for the Army. The Mustang was utilized throughout 40 USAAF fighter groups and numerous squadrons. American P-51 Mustang pilots claimed 4,950 enemy aircraft shot down, achieving an impressive 11:1 “kill ratio”, second only to the carrier-borne Grumman F6F Hellcat among Allied aircraft. They were used for dive-bombing, bomber escorts, ground attacks, interceptions, photo-reconnaissance missions, training, transportation (with a jump-seat), and post-war high-performance racing. Captain Glenn T. EaglestonThe 354th Fighter Group, also referred to as the “Pioneers,” commenced operations with P-51B Mustangs over France in December 1943. Initially, part of the Ninth Air Force, the 354th was temporarily assigned to the Eighth for bomber escort duty. They received their P-51B’s powered by Merlin engines in November, overseen by the formidable Don Blakeslee as the interim CO. Blakeslee led the 354th in multiple missions, encouraging the pilots to aggressively engage German fighters in a high-stakes aerial standoff, relying on the Germans to disengage first. During the harsh winter weather of 1943-44, the 354th frequently split its three squadrons into four color-coded flights of four aircraft each. Among the distinguished pilots of the 354th were Glenn Eagleston and Jim Howard. Notably, on January 5, 1944, during the Group’s coverage of the bomber withdrawal from Kiel, Eagleston downed an Fw 190 with a brief burst at 23,000 feet, causing the German aircraft to steeply plunge and become unrecoverable, marking Eagleston’s first victory. On that mission, the Group claimed 18 enemy aircraft. Eagleston participated in escort missions regularly during the winter, steadily increasing his tally: downing a ME-110 on Jan. 30, single ME-110s on both Feb. 21 and 22, and a Bf-109 on March 6, attaining ace status. In the spring of 1944, the 354th resumed its original tactical duties in preparation for D-Day. Following the Allied invasion of Normandy in mid-June, the 354th FG relocated to Cricqueville-en-Bessin, an advanced base in Normandy, and reverted to the Ninth Air Force command. At that point, Eagleston achieved 8.5 kills and had been promoted to captain. Concluding his initial combat tour, he returned to the US for shore leave and resumed active duty in the autumn of 1944. His most prolific day was on October 29, 1944, when he dispatched three Bf 109s in a half-hour dogfight, leading to the award of the Distinguished Service Cross. Eagleston was credited with 18.5 victories, two probable victories, and seven damaged German aircraft. Additionally, he destroyed at least five enemy aircraft on the ground during his time in the 354th FG, flying a P-51 Mustang named “Feeble Eagle”.
