The scarf was designed in 1992 by artist, Kermit Oliver, for Hermes. The motif is best described by Hermes in its 1992/1993 Le Carre booklet as follows: “Here is Christopher Columbus in all the glory of his discovery, the moment when powerful Europe first set foot on the continent of the future, which it believed was “The Indies”. Facing the navigator, who is surrounded by all the attributes of the splendor of Spain, is an Indian covered with gold and crowned with sacred feathers, looking a bit uneasy but also curious about the precise nature of this apparition, believing it might signify the return of his long-awaited king, Quetzalcoatl.“ The design is harmoniously rich. The Hermes Les Amériques Silk Scarf, by Kermit Oliver, offers a superb method to add definition to an outfit. It is chic, striking, and the style of accessory that can define an ensemble. Perhaps a more appropriate utilization for this particular scarf would be to frame and display it as the rare piece of artwork it befittingly is. The silk twill scarf, with hand rolled edges, measures approximately 36” x 36”. It is in very good, previously worn, vintage condition. Faint runs are barely beginning along the edges where the hem was hand stitched. The box has some writing on one edge.
