In 1836 a landmark book was published by Alfred Ronalds of the London suburb of Highbury, “The Fly-Fisher’s Entomology”. It was the archetype fly-fishing book that went to over a dozen editions between 1836 and 1913 and became the benchmark for all works that followed. Describing methods, techniques, and most importantly, artificial flies in a meaningful way for the angler and illustrating them in color is a method of presentation that can be seen in most fly-fishing literature today. Given the history of fly fishing and the strong influence of the UK in its development, it’s not surprising that several of the most noted equipment designers/manufacturers had their roots in 19th century England. Three of the best known manufacturers are Hardy in Alnwick, S. Allcock & Co. Ltd. in Redditch and J. W. Young & Sons in Redditch. When Daiwa of Japan decided to enter the high end fly fishing equipment market, it was only natural that they base the company in the UK. Daiwa Sports Ltd. is located in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The top line of fly rods were made in Scotland and the reels were made in England. As an example of their quality and reputation, during the European Fishing Tackle Trade Association’s National Angling Awards 2003, the Best Salmon Fly Reels were the Daiwa Alltmor Salmon AM9/10, AM 11/12 and the Best Salmon Fly Rod was the Alltmor Orator 15’. Allt Mor is a small river in Northeast Scotland. Daiwa Sports Ltd. around that time also produced a line of trout rods, the highest quality being the Alltmor S and the best fly reel being the English made Alltmor series Mid-Arbor Disc Drag. Hard to find this high quality vintage tackle in the US. This reel is in good condition as pictured. It is a precision machined aluminum Mid-Arbor Disc Drag reel made in England by Hardy. The reel can be changed from left to right hand and the Audible Click to silent. The Alltmor Disc Drag can be adjusted by simply turning the knurled regulator button on the face of the frame clockwise to increase the drag and counterclockwise to decrease. I have fished primarily with vintage Daiwa fly and spinning gear since the early 1970’s and can attest to their quality. At 70, it’s time to pass on some of my cherished Daiwa gear on to a new user/collector. The reel is 3 ½” in diameter and 1 ½” wide up to the drag. The reel has a free spinning polished hardwood handle on the spool and allows for hand pressure control. It is ready to fish with backing, floating line and leader. It comes in its original blue box with original manual and blue neoprene case. These reels should not be confused with the later Daiwa Seiko Inc. Japanese Alltmor-X 100D, 200D or 300D series fly reels. Rare opportunity to acquire one of the highest quality #7/8 line fly reels made.
