PYREX has been produced in 3 Major Categories: CLEAR (1915 -); Flameware (1936-79); Coloured (Clear and Milk Glass) (1947-) … Offered here is a Matching Pair of – Vintage PYREX – Small Size MPN 501-B, Opal-White Milk-Glass, Oven-To-Refrigerator Dishes – FRIDGIES – with Butterprint Pattern fired-on Graphics – in Most-EXCELLENT, barely-used condition. There are NO Lids offered here. All glass surfaces are super-HIGHLY-GLOSSY, shiny and clean. There are no significant rubs, scratches, or contact marks; No obvious cracks nor flea-bites – one dish has a chip on the upper outer edge with some specks of residue within – there is a little texture to the chipped glass (roughness) … same dish has a little discolouration; minimal fine rubs, scratches, or contact marks. Each of the Refrigerator Dish Bases are made of opal-white, ovenproof, PYREX milk-glass. The Butterprint Turquoise-Blue Colour Graphic’s are in MOST-EXCELLENT condition, on all pieces – they are Crisp, Clear, and Complete – no fade, and high-gloss. The graphics are a little thinner through the neck of one rooster image – likely as made as it doesn’t appear to be from wear, contact, nor washing. The form of these fridgies is gently tapered from the top edge to bottom, where it rounds-in to the subtle pedestal base seat-rim – the base is recessed within that rim. The corners are rounded. Each Small Fridgie measures – ~4 1/4″x 3 3/8″ across the top edge; 2 1/2″ in height; 3 1/4″ x 2 3/8″ 2 1/2″ x 1 7/8″ across the base seat rim. Each Small Fridgie is embossed on the base in rectangular box format – “501-B; 1 1/2 CUP; PYREX “circled R”; MADE IN U.S.A; production #; ” production #’s are – 20, 28 – an earlier production run based on the MPN. SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION – PYREX – Butterprint Pattern – 1957-68 – Butterprint is a pattern which depicts a “country Amish farming scene”. This pattern is the most well-known of the vintage pieces produced by PYREX and matches in colour with PYREX’s pattern called “white snowflake on turquoise”. The “Butterprint Pattern” arrived in 1957 – the most common version was “Turquoise over Opal-White Milk Glass. Butterprint Nesting (ROUND) Mixing Bowls were released after the Cinderella series (1957), in 1958/9 – BOTH a 300 (3 bowl set; 401-403) series and a 400 (4 bowl set; 401-404) series of bowls were available and were all “Turquoise over Opal-White Milk Glass”. Butterprint was available until 1968. The first pieces released with this pattern were Cinderella mixing-bowls in 1957 then came 470 series lidded casserole dishes and refrigerator sets in the very later 1950s (1959), later still were round mixing-bowls and 480 series lidded casserole dishes in 1960. PYREX – Lidded Refrigerator Dishes – Lidded, stackable, squared-off, clear PYREX dishes – FRIDGIES – were first produced in 1925. The first coloured-opal ‘fridgies” were released in ~1949, back to clear for a few years followed by a wide variety of pattern options from the early 1950’s until the 1960’s. Worth having a good look at when you are searching for pieces – the lids and back-stamps tell the story & help with respect to having properly matched items and sets. Helpful for dating Correctly COMPLETE Oven-to-Refrigerator dishes is the STYLE of lid as TWO TYPES were manufactured. The First Lids, of Earlier-Production runs, had a clear gap in the middle; fines lines at both sides. Next came, in later-Production runs, lids with wider ribbing all the way across the top surface. Also, helpful for dating Correctly COMPLETE Oven-to-Refrigerator dishes is how the product #s are presented. The first MPN’s – “three-digit-then-dash” (ie 500s-B/C) being associated with earlier production runs and then, later came – “four-digit-then-dash” (ie 0500s-B/C) MPN’s – applied to lids and dishes. The back-stamps of earlier run items read – “T.M REG/ U.S. PAT. OFF.” Worth having a good look at when you are searching for pieces. Also – more rare are CANADIAN MADE fridgie sets, as the production period was shorter and fewer sets were made.
